Las Vegas healthcare revamp cuts wait times, visits

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A new approach to health care is aiming to make it easier for Southern Nevadans to see a doctor without long waits or hospital visits.

An expanding local practice, Upbeat Health is now offering same-day appointments and even bringing specialized care directly to patients’ homes.

“Since 2013, I’ve noticed that there’s been a tremendous need for primary care; we see people just continuously neglecting their health,” said Justin Bituin, CEO of Upbeat Health.

According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, Nevada currently ranks 48th in the nation for primary care physicians per 100,000 residents.

A shortage that leaves many without timely medical attention. Bituin said that’s where his clinic steps in.

“Were able to treat these patients a lot quicker and were able to reduce the amount of time that they’re in the hospital,” said Bituin.

According to Cervicorn Consulting, the global home healthcare market is experiencing rapid expansion, with estimates placing the 2024 value between $100 and $300 billion dollars, driven by an aging population, an increase in chronic diseases, and home care services.

For Karin Coelho, that mobile care made a critical difference. She’s battling colon cancer and a tumor in her stomach.

“I had spent five weeks in the hospital, so my mobility was very limited when I first got out, and they came to see me. I was also fighting multiple infections,” said Coelho.

Coelho said having medical care come to her home brought both relief and comfort. Upbeat Health visited her the day after she was discharged from the hospital, ensuring there was no delay in her treatment.

“I didn’t have to leave to go get care, so when they started, I was on IVs. I was on all kinds of stuff at home, so it was extremely helpful,” said Coelho.

About 32 percent of Nevadans report needing a primary care provider but being unable to see one when needed.
